Not all missionary territory is located on the other side of the globe. Some missions are within a few hours of driving from New Jersey.

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place in parishes across the Diocese on the weekend of April 23-24.

Home mission dioceses are located all across the United States, including the Deep South, Appalachia, and the Rocky Mountains. These dioceses lack the resources to provide their faithful with basic pastoral care, including the sacraments, religious education, and ministry training.

There are over 80 mission dioceses in the United States, according the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Home mission dioceses often struggle with priest shortages, parishioner poverty, unemployment, difficult and isolated terrain, religious hostility, and other circumstances that make it difficult to practice the faith. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal strengthens the Church in the United States by providing yearly grants to support programs in home mission dioceses, which make up over 40% of all US dioceses.

The Appeal primarily supports home mission dioceses, which are dioceses in the United States that are unable to offer their people the basic pastoral ministries of word, worship, and service without outside help. It may also give grants to other dioceses in the U.S. for particular projects, and to organizations and religious communities engaged in missionary work.

One way that this appeal works to support home mission dioceses in the United States is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. While having men in the seminary is a blessing, it also places a financial burden on these dioceses, as the cost of educating each seminarian runs close to $40,000 per year.

"The Catholic Home Missions Appeal is an opportunity to help strengthen the Church in the United States, said Bishop Edward J. Burns of Juneau, chairman of the USCCB Subcommittee on Catholic Home Missions, in an appeal letter to U.S. Catholics. "This appeal is an opportunity to support and strengthen the Church’s mission here in the United States."
