Holy Cross School pays tribute to veterans

The student body and faculty of Holy Cross School, Rumson, gathered with their families to observe Veterans’ Day. This year students were asked to invite veterans to visit their school and be honored in a special way. Veterans were present from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and Desert Storm.

The parish gymatorium stage was adorned with red, white and blue stars and banners and each attendee received a program detailing the assembly.

Patriotic music was provided by music director Carly McIlvaine, who led the assembly in song, accompanied by Ricky Stefanik on guitar and Conor Meehan on piano.

The assembly opened with the singing of “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” Cub Scouts Mark Williamson and Hunter Thomas-Burgos, and Boy Scouts John Paul Burgess, Simon Osmont, and Conor Finan led the procession of 15 veterans down the center aisle of the gymatorium.

Sixth and seventh grade students read a history of Veterans’ Day, recited a poem about the life of a veteran, and enacted a skit to explain what it means to be veteran. A video was played to the song “American Soldier.”  The veterans were called up individually to be thanked by Holy Cross students and each veteran was presented with a certificate in honor of their service.

The assembly concluded with the singing of “God Bless America.”
