High School thespians receive recognition by Count Basie Theater

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

Two seniors from Holmdel’s St. John Vianney High School have been nominated for the 2013 Count Basie Theatre Awards recognizing excellence in high school theater performances. Brianna Liguori and Julia Purcell are amongst the competitors in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama and were recognized at the Red Bank Theater May 22.

The annual Count Basie Theatre Awards recognize outstanding achievement in the dramatic and musical theatre productions of Monmouth County’s high school theatre companies. An evaluation committee, which consists of professional actors, singers, directors and choreographers, sends four evaluators to assess each Monmouth County high school’s production. Liguori and Purcell were recognized for their work in “Getting an Education: A Presentation of One Acts” held Nov. 16-18 at St. John Vianney.

In early May, the evaluators examine the numerical scoring and written commentary to compile a list of nominations in categories similar to Broadway’s Tony Awards. The annual awards ceremony included musical production numbers by the schools nominated for Overall Outstanding Musical and musical medleys performed by those nominated by for Lead Actor and Actress.
