High school team places in NJ Academic Decathlon


The Academic Decathlon Team of Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, qualified for the state playoffs in March by placing third in Region Three of the N.J. Academic Decathlon held Feb. 4. All awards were announced at a banquet held at West Windsor Plainsboro High School South. Following is a list of those decathletes receiving awards: Amanda Cialino: honorable mention in music, bronze medal in interview; Dan DeToro: honorable mention in economics, honorable mention in speech; Colleen Ensor: silver medal in language and literature, gold medal in essay, bronze medal in speech. Ensor also received the MVP award for the team.

Amanda DeSombre: silver medal in art, honorable mention in speech; Christina Reali: bronze medal in art, bronze medal in essay, honorable mention in interview. Reali was also the high scoring decathlete in the scholastic division.

Michael Quigley: gold medal in science, bronze medals in art and music, honorable mentions in economics, language and literature, math and speech. Quigley was the high scoring decathlete in the varsity division.

Tara Aksan: honorable mention in the Written Super Quiz; Katherine Quigley: honorable mention in the Written Super Quiz; Niranjan Ramanand: gold pin in science, silver pin in math; Gunjun Desai: bronze pin in math, bronze medal in Written Super Quiz; both Thomas Hollingsworth and Catherine Moresco had the high scoring speeches in the division and both presented their speeches at the awards dinner to standing ovations.

Hollingsworth won the silver medal overall in speech and also had the highest score in the Visual Super Quiz; Moresco, who was the high scoring decathlete in the honors division, won honorable mentions in economics and language and literature, a bronze medal in essay, gold medal in speech and interview.

The team as a whole took third place in the Visual Super Quiz. The team is mentored by vice-principal, Kathy D’Andrea. Unable to attend the event were team members A.J. Imperiale, Peter Flanagan, Alyssa Laguerta, Claudia Dabrowski, and Vanessa Konzelmann.
