Group offers Rosary for recovering addicts and their loved ones

The City of Angels NJ, Inc., a Hamilton-based organization which provides resources and spiritual guidance for recovering addicts and their families, is offering “Rosary Miracles” each Tuesday night at 6 p.m. and seeking the intercession of Our Lady in helping society’s hurting and vulnerable. The new weekly event, a uniquely Catholic response to the challenges of addiction, was created by Deacon Bill Wilson of St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton Square, and Jackie Hofman of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Yardville.

City of Angels NJ, Inc. was founded in 2009 by Kevin and MaryAnn Meara, parishioners of St. Vincent de Paul, after the death of their son K.C. from a drug overdose. The all-volunteer staff and board of the group address the disease of addiction and supply needed support for families, interventions and referrals to treatment agencies. The works of City of Angels were featured in two segments of “The Catholic Corner” entitled “Hope for Addicts and Their Families” and broadcast May 22 and June 5, 2012.

“City of Angels has a Sunday night non-denominational spirituality group, but this is definitely Catholic,” explained Hofmann, whose life has been changed by an addicted family member. “I love Our Lady. I pray to her all the time, ‘Use me in your hands.’ When a friend told me this kind of group was being conducted elsewhere, I just knew we could do it.”

The group prays the traditional Rosary decade by decade, interspersed with Biblical reflections designed for those suffering from addictions. Hofmann dubbed the event Rosary Miracles “because the Rosary is the prayer of miracles. Through the intercession of Our Lady, lives are changed and saved,” she stated. “She can bring addicted loved ones to God.”

Deacon Wilson agreed about the universal appeal of the prayers and reflections offered. “It is for kids in recovery, for their parents, for their grandparents,” he noted.

Rosary Miracles is scheduled for Tuesday nights at 6 p.m. and held in the Raymond Dwier Center, 392 Church Street, in the Groveville section of Hamilton.
