St. Aloysius School, Jackson, is taking strides towards aiding its students to overcome glossophobia, or fear of public speaking, in a series of exercises performed before an audience of their peers.

Classes on elocution begin in the third grade, where students give formal presentations on the lives of the presidents dressed in period costumes like he or his first lady might have worn. Fourth grade students create an elaborate “wax museum” of famous characters and invite guests to hear their presentations. Fifth graders present three religious skits and songs portraying Bible stories to the audience.

By the time they graduate from the eighth grade, St. Aloysius students have given approximately 27 formal speeches in front of an audience. They are taught to balance content with creativity and are judged on eye contact, expression and articulation. Many integrate technology into their presentations, using PowerPoint, Keynote and i-Movie.
