Georgian Court University to hold critical concerns lecture series

Georgian Court University’s Office of Mission Integration is sponsoring “Critical Concerns 2017: Embracing Nonviolence in a Turbulent World,” a series of presentations on issues of nonviolence addressed by the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. Events include the following:
Nov. 6, 6 to7:30 p.m., Little Theatre: Film screening and discussion of “Escape From Room 18,” which follows a former Neo-Nazi who receives an email from someone in his past: a fellow ex-skinhead who suggests they visit an eastern European concentration camp to seek redemption of their sins. Following the screening, the film’s director, Daniel Brea, will discuss its themes.
Nov. 7, 2 to 4:30 p.m., Little Theatre: Film screening and discussion of “Don’t Tell Anyone/No Le Digas a Nadie,” a PBS documentary that tells the remarkable journey of Angy Rivera, rights activist and DREAMER, from poverty in rural Colombia to the front page of the New York Times as an advocate for the rights of undocumented young people in the United States. Following the screening will be a Q&A session with Rivera.
Nov. 7, 6 p.m., Little Theatre: Book discussion of “Dorothy Day: The World Will Be Saved by Beauty” by author Kate Hennessy, who is a grandchild of the social activist who fought for the poorest of the poor. A book signing will be held at the library.
Nov 8, 2 p.m., Little Theatre: “Let your voice be heard,” a discussion with panelists from the GCU coordinated community response team, will focus on the nature and impact gender-based violence can have on someone’s life.
Nov. 9, 2 p.m., University Community Chapel: Critical Concerns 2017 Mass.
Nov. 9, 4:30 p.m. The Mansion: Mercy Collegiate Society High Tea and Ritual.
Nov. 9, 7 p.m., Little Theatre: Student panel discussion on nonviolence.
From Nov. 6 – 10, in various locations on campus, all are encouraged to sign a pledge against gender-based violence and view “Voices of Women During the Holocaust,” research-based posters funded by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that reflect the strength of women who played important roles in various resistance activities such as leaders of ghetto resistance organizations and the community-organizing efforts of Jewish women in concentration camps.
