George H. Shaffer, father of priest

Father G. Scott Shaffer, pastor of St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson, was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial June 18 for his father, George H. Shaffer, who died June 12 at age 81.

The funeral Mass was celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, Mount Holly.

Born in Delanco, Mr. Shaffer was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Following his discharge, he spent the majority of his career as an engineer at the PSE&G generating station in Burlington, from which he retired in 1987. He was instrumental in the construction of the CYO Little League fields in Mount Holly and coached youth baseball players for 14 seasons. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener.

In addition to his priest-son, Mr. Shaffer is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Heether Shaffer; a daughter, Cindy (Robert) Woodington; two other sons, John (Karen) and Roger (Mary); six grandchildren; a brother, and several nieces and grandnephews and their families.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fox Chase Cancer Center at Virtua Hospital, 175 Madison Ave., N.J. 08060 or to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 260 High St., Mount Holly, N.J. 08060.
