Funeral services for Sister Catherine (Kate) Nugent

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 12 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Catherine (Kate) Nugent who died June 9 after a long illness. She was 68.

Born in Orange, Sister Kate entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1961. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Georgian Court College, and a master’s degree in counseling from Kean College. She spent most of her religious life serving in the ministries of teaching, educational guidance, religious formation of postulants and novices, and spiritual direction. Parishes and schools where she served in the Trenton Diocese include St. Joseph, Trenton, St. Charles Borromeo, Cinnaminson, and St. Catherine, Middletown.

Other ministries in which Sister Kate served include director of volunteer services in Calcutta House, Philadelphia, and pastoral ministry on the local and diocesan levels.

Sister Kate is survived by a sister, a brother, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and members of the Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic Community as well as other friends.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
