Funeral services for Christian Brother Christian Jones, 84

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 17 in De La Salle Hall, Lincroft, for Christian Brother Christian Jones, who died March 13. He was 84.

Brother Christian was born in Brooklyn and received the holy habit of the Christian Brothers Sept. 7, 1943.

Brother Christian was chairman of the mathematical department of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, from 1975 until 2005. He established the annual CBA Eighth Grade Math Contest, which is now named in his honor.

Brother Christian was a 1959 graduate of Manhattan College, New York City, where he earned a master of arts degree. He received the 1995 Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Math Teaching and was a member of the National Council of Teachers of Math, Mathematical Association of America, New York and New Jersey State Associations of Math Teachers, and was a past president of the Catholic High School Math League.

His teaching assignments included Sacred Heart School and Holy Name School, both in New York City; Lincoln Hall, Lincolndale, N.Y.; La Salle School, Albany, N.Y., where he served as principal; Bishop Loughlin High School, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Christian Brothers Academy. Brother Christian had been in residence at De La Salle Hall since 2008.

Burial was in the Christian Brothers section of St. Gabriel Cemetery, Marlboro.

Memorial donations may be made to De La Salle Nursing Development, 810 Newman Springs Rd., Lincroft, N.J. 07738.
