Bishop Paul G. Bootkoski, of the Diocese of Metuchen, was principal celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial June 21 in St. James Church, Woodbridge, for Msgr. George M. Brembos who died June 15 at age 80.

Msgr. Brembos was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Trenton 55 years ago on May 27, 1956, by Bishop George W. Ahr in St. Anthony Church, Hamilton. However, when the then-eight-county Diocese of Trenton was split in 1981, and the new four-county Diocese of Metuchen was created, Msgr. Brembos served out his priestly ministry in parishes, schools and diocesan assignments as a priest for the Metuchen Diocese.

Msgr. Brembos was born in Yonkers, N.Y. He attended Holy Spirit School, Asbury Park, and St. Rose High School, Belmar. He prepared for the priesthood at St. Charles College, Catonsville, Md., and Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, where he received degrees in philosophy and theology.

As a newly ordained priest, Msgr. Brembos served as associate pastor of St. Mary Parish, South Amboy. He also served in St. Matthew Parish, Edison, where he later became administrator. He was pastor of Guardian Angels Parish, Edison, and then St. Elizabeth Parish, Far Hills, and St. Brigid Parish, Peapack.

Other assignments Msgr. Brembos held were as a religion teacher in St. Mary High School, Perth Amboy. He was also the founding principal of Pius X High School, Piscataway, where he also taught religion and mathematics in addition to his duties as principal. He was also an adjunct professor at St. John University, Staten Island, N.Y., where he taught high school statistics for college credits.

Msgr. Brembos served as diocesan vicar for education, dean of the Cathedral Deanery and Middlesex County director of CYO; Second Instance Judge of the Tribunal of the Province of Newark and a member of both the presbyteral council and administrative council.

Pope John Paul II named him a prelate of honor with the title of Reverend Monsignor in 1986.

In addition to the Mass of Christian Burial, a memorial Mass was celebrated June 20 in St. James Church by Msgr. William Benwell, vicar general for the Diocese of Metuchen.

Msgr. Brembos had been a priest-in-residence at St. James Parish, Woodbridge, since his retirement from active ministry in 2007.
