Funeral for Sister Mary Gervase SanAntonio, Lakewood native

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 18 in St. Catherine of Siena Chapel in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Gervase SanAntonio who died April 13. She was 88.

Born in Lakewood, Sister Mary Gervase received her early education in St. Mary Academy, Lakewood, and Lakewood Public High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree in science from Georgian Court University, Lakewood, and a master’s degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University, South Orange.

Sister Mary Gervase entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1944 and spent most of her religious life in the ministry of education in the Trenton and Metuchen Dioceses. Schools she served in the Trenton Diocese included St. Ann, Keansburg, St. Mary Academy, and St. Dominic, Brick. Outside of New Jersey, she also had an opportunity to volunteer in St. Brendan School, Ormond Beach, Fla.

Sister Mary Gervase was predeceased by her parents, August and Eleanor SanAntonio. She is survived by a brother, three sisters and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and her fellow Sisters of Mercy.

Burial was in Holy Redeemer Cemetery, South Plainfield.
