Funeral for Sister Mary Evelyn Pitonyak, 89

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Jan. 6 in McAuley Hall Health Care Center, Watchung, for Mercy Sister Mary Evelyn Pitonyak, who died Jan. 3. She was 89.

Sister Mary Evelyn was born and raised in Trenton and was a graduate of Cathedral High School, Trenton. Sister Mary Evelyn entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1942. She held a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Georgian Court University, Lakewood.

Sister Mary Evelyn taught in schools in the Dioceses of Trenton and Metuchen, including St. Joseph School, Trenton. She also was a library assistant in Georgian Court University. She retired in 1994 and lived in St. James Convent, Red Bank, until she moved to McAuley Hall in 1997.

She is survived by two sisters, Mercy Sister Mary Emerie Pitonyak of Watchung, and Helen Pitonyak of Trenton; two nephews and members of the Sisters of Mercy in the Mid-Atlantic community. Burial was in St. Mary Cemetery, Hamilton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, Mount St. Mary, 1645 Highway 22, Watchung, N.J. 07069.
