Friends of the Poor Walk/Run benefits local Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The St. Mary of the Lakes’ youth group, Youth Energized in the Spirit (Y.E.S.), Medford, is hosting this year’s Friends of the Poor Walk/Run to be held Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Freedom Park, Medford.
Walkers and runners can register for the event now at www.fopwalk.
org and are encouraged to secure donations for their efforts from friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers.
Funds raised will benefit the Medford Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which offers person-to-person service to those in need in Medford, Medford Lakes, Browns Mills, Pemberton, Moorestown and the surrounding area.
The day will include food and music and participants are invited to walk with their pets.

Between October 2012 and June 2013, Medford’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul provided more than 1,600 families consisting of 4,600 adults and children with food, clothing, and financial assistance totaling more than $300,000.
This included helping 95 families with rental and mortgage assistance ($57,000) to keep a roof over their heads and 89 families with utility bills ($32,000) to heat and light their homes. Nearly 50 families had other needs met: car repair, car insurance, and medical expenses ($8,300). More than 1,600 families received food worth $207,000.
Others in need received clothing ($5,900). In addition, 439 families received dinner, candy, and gifts for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
The Friends of the Poor Walk/Run is a national program coordinated by the national SVDP office. The inaugural event took place in 2008. Last year, the Friends of the Poor Walk/Run raised more than $1.8 million through the efforts of more than 19,000 walkers at 220 different locations in the United States.
