Franciscan Sister Helen Young, 91, taught in Catholic schools

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 7 for Franciscan Sister Helen Young, who died June 2 at 91.
Born in Philadelphia, Bridget Helen Young entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1936 and professed her first vows in 1939. Upon joining the order she was known as Sister Helen Marynia. Her biological sister, the late Sister Theresa Emmanuel, also was a member of the congregation.
Sister Helen earned a bachelor’s degree in music from The Catholic University of America, Washington, and a master’s degree in theology from St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. She ministered primarily in education, on both elementary and secondary levels, and also served for a time in parish ministry. A gifted musician, she also taught music in many schools.
In the Diocese of Trenton, Sister Helen taught in McCorristin High School, Trenton, from 1975-1985. She then moved to St. Mary of the Lakes School, Medford, from 1988-1995.
She also spent 44 years in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, where she taught in several schools.
From 1995-2002, Sister Helen served as liturgist in Assisi House, Aston, Pa., and continued to volunteer there until 2006. In 2006, she moved to Assisi House, where she served in prayer ministry until her death.
Funeral services were held in Assisi House. Burial was in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Aston, Pa.
Sister Helen is survived by a cousin, Tom Haney, and her Franciscan family. Donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Francis Foundation, 609 S. Convent Road, Aston, PA 19014.
