First Mass for all in catechetical ministry Nov. 12

The gifts and talents of all persons who serve in the ministry of catechesis will be recognized in a special and prayerful way at the first-ever diocesan Mass for All in Catechetical Ministry to be celebrated Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.

The Mass, which will be celebrated by Father Doug Freer, vicar for education, is open to all parish directors and coordinators of religious education, RCIA coordinators and team members, adult faith formation leaders and catechists who minister in parish program as well as those to children with special needs through the diocesan Holy Innocents Society. All pastors of the diocese are invited to concelebrate.

Father Freer said he hopes that the catechetical Mass will not only call attention to the work of catechists, but will also enlighten people who are not familiar with their work to develop a deeper appreciation of that important ministry.

The theme for the Nov. 12 Mass, “When the Son of Man Comes, will He Find Faith on Earth?” is based on the Scripture passage from the Gospel according to Luke (18:8), Father Freer explained, noting that another important goal of the day will be to serve as a “reminder that everything we do (as Catholics) in handing on the faith is grounded in the Eucharist.”

“All of our ministries come from the altar,” he said, “and this day will give us a chance to bring catechists together around the table to thank them for their work to bring the Gospel to others.”

Father Freer explained that his inspiration for hosting a Mass that would bring catechetical ministers together was drawn from the success of two recent diocesan events that were regarded as being tremendously successful – the Catholic Schools Mass held this past St. Patrick’s Day and the catechetical convocation held in the spring of 2010.

In both cases, he said, the feedback was consistently positive. People really appreciated the opportunity to get together and celebrate their ministry.
