Since Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., called for a collection to “provide aid to the people of the Philippines in this time of great devastation,” parishes, schools, and individuals throughout the Trenton Diocese have continued to support relief efforts with generous contributions.
Recent reports indicate that 5,632 people perished when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines Nov. 8. It is believed 1,759 are still missing and 670,000 are displaced.
According to the latest figures from the Diocese, the special collection Nov. 16 and 17 has reached $480,697.50.
Of that amount, $465, 502.50 was received to date from 65 parish collections with $400.00 from diocesan schools and $14,795 from individuals.
Thus far, $215,000 has been wired to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines; $250,000 will be wired on Dec. 6. The Diocese will continue to wire weekly as the remaining parishes send in their collections.
