Father Crosby's take on the Beatitudes to enliven annual Spirituality Conference
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
Franciscan Father Michael Crosby's name will be added to the long list of noted Catholic theologians, speakers and authors who have shared their insights and inspiration at the Upper Room's Annual Spirituality Conference Nov. 14.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event which has brought such internationally known presenters as columnist Father Ronald Rolheiser, Franciscan Father Richard Rohr and noted commentator Father James Martin to the day-long event held in Georgian Court University, Lakewood.
The conference will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fee is $65-$80 on a sliding scale according to ability to pay. A box lunch is available for an additional $9.
Sister of St. Joseph Trudy Ahern, co-director of the Upper Room, said those attending should expect to be moved and inspired by his presentation entitled “Taking the Beatitudes Seriously – For A Change.”
Pope Francis has called these core teachings a “program for Christian life,” and “the identity card of a Christian,” she noted.
But in his prepared releases, suggests that, not only are they counter cultural, most Christians cannot recount them, drawing inspiration from the prohibitions of the Ten Commandments rather than the blessings of the Beatitudes.
The Beatitudes, Father Crosby says, represent Jesus' vision of the life of a true believer, the way of an authentic disciple and he will present them as the essence of Christian discipleship, containing the necessary tools for living authentically in a very complex world.
Father Crosby strives to embody the beatitudes in his own life, living in community with other friars in a downtown Milwaukee parish that serves the urban poor and homeless existing on the margins of society. His ministry revolves around his attempt to proclaim the Gospel in ways that help develop a spirituality of discipleship for “First World” Catholics.
His preaching and writing on contemporary biblical discipleship have taken him around the world by way of workshops, retreats and parish missions. The author of 17 books, his most recent works are: “Finding Francis, Following Christ,” Orbis and “The Paradox of Power: Moving from Control to Compassion in a Violent World,” Crossroads.
