Families a special focus of this year's Blue Mass

In years past, when hundreds of members of law enforcement filled St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral in Trenton for the annual Blue Mass, their families had always been there with them in spirit. But the timing of the weekday event didn’t often allow many families to take part, given their typical school and work schedules.

But the scheduling of this year’s Celebration of Law Enforcement during Easter week will make it possible for many spouses and children to attend and offer a visible show of support for their family members who serve and protect the public.

The Diocese of Trenton’s 16th Annual Blue Mass honoring law enforcement personnel in Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean and Burlington Counties will be celebrated April 7, at 10:30 a.m. in the cathedral located at 151 N. Warren Street, Trenton. The event is held to offer thanks to God for the dedication and sacrifice made by the women and men in law enforcement and for their families and communities. The Celebration of Law Enforcement, or Blue Mass as it has come to be known, is sponsored by the Diocese each year and is coordinated by the Blue Mass committee, among others.

Some 600 members of law enforcement are expected to take part in the Mass, including color guard units, bagpipers, and drum and bugle corps from throughout the region. The Mass will offer an opportunity for the law enforcement community to honor and pray for fallen officers and their families.  Survivors of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty will attend.

Following Mass, a luncheon will be held in the cathedral hall catered by Amici Milano of Trenton. Law enforcement personnel of all faiths, along with their family and friends are cordially invited to take part in the Celebration of Law Enforcement.

Luncheon tickets are $20 per person.  Immediate families of law enforcement personnel are free, reservation requested.  To obtain tickets or reserve a ticket, contact Jennifer Britton, communications assistant, at 609-403-7199; [email protected].  Tickets can be obtained the day of the event.  For more information, visit dioceseoftrenton.org/bluemass.
