Evening of song from opera, stage, screen
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
“Spotlight! Great Choruses from Opera, Stage & Screen” will be the focus of the Greater South Jersey Chorus as it explores music from various genres with the accompaniment of the Strings of Symphony in C.
Performances are scheduled for May 5, at 3:30 p.m. in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Cherry Hill, 401 Kings Highway, Cherry Hill, and May 18, at 8 p.m. in St. Isaac Jogues Church at Elmwood Road and Medford-Evesboro Road, Marlton.
“Presenting a single masterwork in concert is always a thrill, but to create a whole concert of separate songs is something very special. This spring, we’ll perform great opera choruses along with familiar songs from Broadway shows and movies,” said Dean Rishel, GSJC artistic director.
Rishel explained that juxtaposing diverse works – such as the musical “Chicago” with Verdi’s “Nabucco,” or “The Flying Dutchman” with “Hairspray,” or “Faust” and “O Brother, Where Art thou?” – creates an exciting and unusual program.
“It is challenging,” he said, “but lots of fun. Everyone will recognize several tunes that they know very well, and discover some new ones,” he said.
Joining the chorus is a return engagement by the Strings of Symphony in C, formerly The Haddonfield Symphony. It is one of three professional training orchestras in the United States, preparing musicians and conductors for world-class careers through concert, educational and professional development programs.
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased in advance online or at the door.
