Essay by Reid Matuch, St. Catharine School, Spring Lake

I was the governor of New Jersey,  I would improve the state a few ways. First, I would upgrade the highways because many are too small, get too crowded and when holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving come, one hour rides can turn into three hours. The summer traffic can be unbearable, thank goodness we live at the beach and don't have to drive home to North Jersey like my cousins. Then, I would make speeches about reducing the greenhouse effect in places such as  Newark, Kearny and other industrial cities. I would also start an anti-smoking  and drug campaign in struggling urban cities and support the program called Too Good for Drugs. I would also try to give criminals a second chance at starting a better  life.

I would create jobs so people can have a good life. I would create programs to help people get through some of America's toughest economic times.

Some of the jobs I would create are government duties such as building roads, bridges and tunnels. People could work on an oil rig or I would help them start a business of their own by giving them tax breaks and special incentives.

I would also upgrade Newark International Airport because it is overcrowded and there are not enough runways for planes to take-off and land. This causes delays. I know this from my own past experiences. I would also make the airport bigger, cleaner and I would negotiate deals with other airlines.

As you can see, I have many ideas on how to make New Jersey better. Not everyone would agree but I think these improvements would help our state become better. This is what I would do if I was governor of New Jersey.
