Grace Gibson and Marc Hartmann, eighth grade religious education students in St. Mary of the Lakes Parish, Medford, were named winners in the parish’s firstever environmental awareness poster and essay contest.

A project created by Msgr. James H. Dubell, pastor, and the parish’s Environmental Awareness Committee, the contest provided a way for seventh and eighth graders in the parish school and religious education program to creatively express their thoughts on the importance of “preserving God’s creation, our environment,” according to Millie Linett, chair of the EAC.

For the contest, Linett said that students had a choice of submitting a 400-word essay or a free-hand drawing poster that addressed the question “Why is St. Francis the patron saint of ecology?” or that reflected three ways a person can be more mindful of creation.

Linett noted that Gibson was honored for her submission of a colorful poster that shows the hand of God drawing a picture of his earthly creation. Included in the drawing is a compelling quote: “God created a beautiful planet for us. St. Francis is here to remind us that it is our responsibility to preserve it. DO YOUR PART TO PROTECT EARTH.”

Hartmann, Linett continued, was recognized for his eloquent essay on St. Francis being the patron saint of ecology.

Excerpts of Hartmann’s essay stated that: “St. Francis had a great love and respect for the creations of God. He had a special bond with animals. Animals of all different species were said to be calm around him… St. Francis truly does deserve to be called the patron saint of ecology. He shared a special bond with animals unlike anyone else. God lead St. Francis through his journeys. God chose him to show the world humans were created for an important reason. Humans were created to take care of and attend to all of God’s wonderful creations…” In offering her congratulations to the students, Linett commented on how “very impressed” she was with the creativity that Gibson put in to designing the poster.

“It is beautiful,” Linett said.

tt Of Hartmann’s essay, Linett remarked on how it reflected the great deal of effort that he invested in researching St. Francis.

Linett said that Msgr. Dubell will present Gibson and Hartmann with gift cards to Barnes &Noble, April 21, during the parish’s Community Sunday fellowship that will follow the 9 a.m. Mass. She added that it is the hope of the EAC to make the poster and essay contest available to school and religious education students on an annual basis.
