The community of El Centro de Recursos Para Familias (The Family Resource Center) is preparing to celebrate the retirement of Sister of Charity Margaret “Peggy” Fitzgibbon, who has been an integral part of the social services agency since its opening in 1999.
The Catholic Charities program is based in downtown Trenton and provides ministry to the city’s Latino community, and director Roberto Hernandez praised the dedication of Sister Peggy.
“She has been with us since day one,” he said.
He credits her with launching the program’s English as a Second Language education program.
“She was the first person here to teach ESL classes,” he said. “It has grown since then – we have now about 12 classes.”
El Centro will celebrate Sister Peggy’s contributions and send her off to retirement with a special celebration at the agency’s Trenton office (327 South Broad Street) on May 13 at noon.
The celebration will include a modest food selection of hot dogs and soda, he said, and will offer the opportunity for her to be honored by current and former students and others who have come to know her over the course of her time in Trenton.
The celebration is intended to “show her our appreciation for her years of service,” said Hernandez, and all are welcome to join in her send-off.
