Dominican Sister Kathleen Sullivan served in Toms River parish, high school

Funeral services were to be held in The Dominican Center on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s College, Newburgh, N.Y., for Dominican Sister Kathleen Sullivan who died April 3 in Wartburg, Mount Vernon, N.Y. She was 83.

Born in New York City, the former Sister James Francis entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, N.Y., in September, 1950; made her first profession in June, 1952; and final profession in August, 1955. She earned a bachelor’s degree in French from Seton Hall University, South Orange, and a master of arts degree in French from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland. She completed post-graduate work in France at the Sorbonne in Parish, in Angers and in Avignon.

Sister Kathleen was a life-long educator, serving in Paterson, and Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River. In 1996, she left the formal classroom but continued at Monsignor Donovan as assistant campus minister and a tutor. For 23 of those teaching years, she was chair of the foreign language department. She started the international dinner for students and parents, developed curriculum for the French/Spanish mini course and initiated French programs for academic support students. She also served as moderator of the National Honor Society and assisted with the school’s international students’ program.

In St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, Sister Kathleen served on the parish planning and development committee and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process.

Burial was to be in the Dominican Sisters’ Cemetery at Mount St. Mary’s College.

Memorial donations may be made to The Dominican Sisters of Hope, 299 North Highland Ave., Ossining, N.Y. 10562-2327.
