Diocese offers enriching theology lectures

The dates for the Core Theology lectures are set for Fall 2014. These lectures are part of the Diocesan Certificate Program, but they are open to the public and are beneficial to all who are seeking knowledge and formation on Catholic teachings.
The lectures will begin with “Introduction to Canon Law” taught by the Tribunal staff Oct. 4. A class entitled “Sacraments/Liturgy: History of the Mass,” taught by Msgr. Sam Sirianni, director of the diocesan Office of Worship, will be offered Oct. 10, followed by “Foundations for Ministry: Intro to Prayer and Spirituality -- Nourishing a ‘Love of Prayer’ in Ministry” with Dianne Traflet, associate dean and assistant professor of pastoral theology in Immaculate Conception School of Theology, Seminary, Seton Hall University, South Orange, on Oct. 11.
Classes will continue the following Oct. 17, with “Foundations for Ministry: Ministry in the Parish Setting” with Gary Maccaroni, pastoral assistant in St. Ann Parish, Lawrenceville, and Gerald Charmant, director, Haitian Ministry, Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony Parish, Hamilton. Part one of the class will cover “Ministry for a Dynamic Church” and part two will examine “Ecclesial Integration and Hospitality.”
On Oct. 21, Daughter of Charity Sister Joanne Dress, executive director of the diocesan Department of Catholic Social Services, will teach the class “Catholic Social Teaching ... building on the threefold cornerstone of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity.”
After a two-week break, classes will continue with “Sacraments/Liturgy: Sacramental Theology – God’s Tool Box: Encountering the Lord Jesus” on Nov. 3 with Msgr. Gerard McCarren, associate professor of systematic theology in ICSST, followed by “Foundations for Ministry: Evangelization” on Nov. 5. led by Andres Arango.
The final class in the fall series will be “Sacraments/Liturgy: Documents of the Church – How They Have Formed the Way We Worship” with Msgr. Sirianni Nov. 22.
The Diocesan Certificate Program provides Core Theology formation (online and in person) for all enrolled as well as specialization training in nine areas of ministry: catechetical leadership; Catholic social services; diocesan Tribunal advocacy; liturgy and music; marriage and family life; New Evangelization and adult faith formation; pastoral care; Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults and youth ministry.
Certificate candidates must complete all CoreTheology and specialization offerings to receive the diocesan certificate. One may register for multiple Core Theology lectures at one time. Send completed registration form to Ministry of Catechesis and Evangelization/DCP, 701 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648.
All classes are held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Chancery, 701 Lawrenceville Rd., Lawrenceville. Classes cost $10; make checks payable to the Diocese of Trenton. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch.
