Diocesan Mass to mark World Mission Sunday
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
With a nod to the universality of the Catholic Church and an appeal to the global faith community to support the less fortunate, parishes of the Diocese of Trenton will join congregations around the world in marking World Mission Sunday Oct. 23.
A Diocesan Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. on Oct. 23 in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a worship site of Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park, located at 805 Pine Street. The celebrant will be Father Peter James Alindogan, diocesan mission director.
World Mission Sunday, organized by the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice.
Celebrated annually on the next-to-last Sunday in October, World Mission Sunday was described by Pope John Paul II as “an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: an offering made to God in the Eucharistic celebration for all the missions of the world.”
In the Diocese of Trenton, parishioners will be asked to offer prayers and contributions during Masses the weekend of Oct. 22-23.
“On this 90th World Mission Sunday, our diocesan family joins our brothers and sisters around the world who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries,” Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., wrote in a letter to faithful around the Diocese of Trenton. “Our prayers and financial help, through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, support the work of the Mission Church, its witness to Christ and service to the poor.”
This year’s theme is “Mercy Changes the World,” a theme connected to the Holy Year of Mercy. Pope Francis wrote extensively about the role of mercy in his message for World Mission Sunday.
“The Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, which the Church is celebrating, casts a distinct light on World Mission Sunday 2016: it invites us to consider the missio ad gentes as a great, immense work of mercy, both spiritual and material,” Pope Francis wrote. “On this World Mission Sunday, all of us are invited to ‘go out’ as missionary disciples, each generously offering their talents, creativity, wisdom and experience in order to bring the message of God’s tenderness and compassion to the entire human family.”
In a letter about World Mission Sunday, Father Alindogan shared a call to action with his fellow Catholics in Central New Jersey.
“We are citizens of the world, members of one Body of Christ, and are at our best when we act lovingly and generously to our brothers and sisters in the Missions,” Father Alindogan wrote. “This year, please pray for the people of the Missions and for missionaries. I ask also for your generous help….”
