A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated July 29 in Sacred Heart Church, Mount Holly, for Deacon Joseph C. Billbrough who died July 25 in Samaritan Hospice at age 93.

He was a member of the first class of permanent deacons ordained by Bishop George W. Ahr for the Diocese of Trenton in 1977.

Deacon Billbrough was a graduate of The Catholic University of America, Washington, and Villanova University, Villanova, Pa., where he earned a master’s degree in theology. As a young man he studied for the priesthood and later, while working for Boeing, he met his wife, Elizabeth McCain, married and raised a family.

He later worked as a book salesman for Benzinger Publishing and then ended his career with Loyola Press.

Following his May, 1978 diaconate ordination in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton, Deacon Billbrough served as assistant to the director of the Diocesan Diaconate Office and, for many years, ministered in Corpus Christi Parish, Willingboro. He was also an adjunct professor at Atlantic Community College.

Deacon Billbrough is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 61 years; five children: Regina (Raymond), Robert, Theresa (Lee), James, and Paul (Arline); six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Interment was private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Dr., Ste. 300, Marlton, N.J. 08053.
