A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sept. 22 in St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake, for Deacon John P. O’Connor, who died Sept. 19 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He was 88.

Deacon O’Connor was born in the Bronx and resided in Brooklyn before moving to Spring Lake Heights 39 years ago. As a resident of the Bronx and Brooklyn, he was the proprietor of O’Connor’s Club Car Restaurant from 1960 to 1979. Prior to that, he owned a tavern in Gerritsen Beach for 10 years. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946.

Deacon O’Connor was ordained a permanent deacon May 14, 1977 by Bishop George W. Ahr in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. He was assigned to St. Catharine and St. Margaret Parishes, Spring Lake, where he assisted at Masses, presided at Baptisms and wake services and brought Holy Communion to the homebound and hospitalized at Jersey Shore Medical Center.

Deacon O’Connor was predeceased by his parents, James F. and Rose McGrath O’Connor, and his brother James F. “Mickey” O’Connor, who was killed in action in the U.S. Army in 1944 during World War II.

Entombment was in St. Catharine Parish Cemetery, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the St. Stephen’s Fund in the Office of the Diaconate, P.O. Box 5147, Trenton, N.J. 08638-0147 or the St. Anne’s Scholarship Fund at St. Catharine School, 301 Second Ave., Spring Lake, N.J. 07762.
