CYO tutoring program gets boost from TD Bank grant

The Mercer County CYO will continue its outreach efforts to students in need of academic assistance with the help of a grant from the TD Bank Charitable Foundation.

The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, donated $5,000 to the CYO’s Trenton Center After School Program for use in their tutoring services. The tutoring program has served more than 300 students, ages five to 12, since its inception in 2006.

Founded in 1976, the CYO after school program at their Trenton Center has provided a variety of services to children on weekday afternoons from September through June, including supervised athletic, educational and recreational activities. Most students in CYO’s Trenton Center after school program are from single-parent, low-income families, and for many, the CYO is the only potential source of academic assistance.

Teachers or families may refer participants for tutoring services, which include uniquely designed individual lesson plans with specific goals based on State standards and individual needs. Students attend two 45-minute sessions per week. Attendance is tracked, and progress measured through the use of pre- and post-assessments. Individual student files are created and used for periodic meetings with parents.

“We are very proud of our tutoring program, and thrilled with this continuing partnership with TD Bank,” said Tom Mladenetz, executive director of the Mercer CYO. “There are many Trenton children who don’t qualify for publicly supported tutoring programs, or whose needs continue after public monies run out.

“Through community partnerships like this one, CYO’s tutoring program can help all children, regardless of public funding limitations. We thank TD Bank for stepping up and encourage other community businesses to do likewise.”
