Students of the Diocese are invited to apply for The Catholic University of America’s Most Reverend David M. O’Connell Service Scholarship, a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for use at the Washington-based Catholic institution. The scholarship is awarded each year to an entering freshman student from the Diocese of Trenton who best embodies Bishop O’Connell’s dedication to service.
The service scholarship, established in 2010, honors Bishop O’Connell, named coadjutor bishop of the Diocese of Trenton by Pope Benedict XVI that June. The Bishop served for 12 years as the Catholic University of America’s 14th president. During his tenure, he emphasized commitment to service, reflecting his Episcopal motto “Ministrare non ministrari,” or “to serve and not to be served,” from the Gospel of Mark.
First awarded in 2011, the scholarship is open to all students in the Diocese of Trenton applying to CUA, with the stipulation that the recipient have a demonstrated record of service and a commitment to service while at the university and in the future.
The Catholic University of America is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States. Founded in 1887 by the U.S. Catholic bishops with the support of Pope Leo XIII, it was originally established as a graduate research center. CUA began offering undergraduate education in 1904 and today is home to 12 schools and 21 research facilities.
Located near the heart of Washington, The Catholic University of America is the only American university with ecclesiastical faculties granting canonical degrees in three disciplines. Its motto is “Deus Lux Mea Est,” or “God is My Light.” Eighty percent of its undergraduates and 57 percent of its graduate students are Catholic.
The Most Reverend David M. O’Connell Service Scholarship does not require a separate application or nomination form, but students who are interested are strongly encouraged to submit a service resume to CUA by Feb. 15, 2015, highlighting service to their communities, schools and parishes. Applicants are considered for this award based upon the completed Undergraduate Application for Admission. Final candidates will be asked to do an interview.
While this scholarship is awarded in Bishop O’Connell’s honor, all communication is conducted only with The Catholic University of America.
