Donovan Catholic High School, Toms River will host “2 Years Later: Celebrating Sandy Recovery” Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m., an event sponsored by Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity.
More than 45 families are expected to join in celebrating their recovery from Superstorm Sandy, and discuss how far they have come.
JoAnn D’Anton, advisor of the Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity chapter at Donovan Catholic High School, said, “Donovan Catholic High School works alongside Habitat and supports all of their events. We just thought it was fitting to be part of this process. We’ve had several families of our own community affected by (Superstorm) Sandy.”
Guest speakers at the celebration will include those whose houses were repaired by Habitat for Humanity. They will share with those present what it was like going through their recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Food will also be donated.
Lizzy Berardi, volunteer and public relations coordinator for Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, said it’s a big help to them that the event is being held at the high school, adding that the school is helping with service at the event as well.
D’Anton shared how the day after Superstorm Sandy hit, the pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Toms River, Father Scott Schaffer, began a food and clothing drive for all Superstorm Sandy victims in the area. He opened up the entire campus of the parish, St. Joseph School and Donovan Catholic High School, as places for people to drop off food and clothing for those in need. They even offered shelter. The St. Joseph community was able to help those who had nothing, D’Anton shared.
“We live here at the shore area and so many families have been affected by Superstorm Sandy. We reach out to those families in need and celebrate that we walk hand in hand,” D’Anton said, adding that this is a way to “be good to our neighbor. Our Gospel message is adamant here in Habitat for Humanity. We’re here for you and support you in anything you need. ‘Feed the hungry, shelter the homeless,’ we’re living out our mission.”
