Columbus Day celebration anticipated for Trenton
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
The 2014 commemoration of Christopher Columbus Day will be the most inclusive ever in the City of Trenton. For the first time in the event’s 13-year history, the Italian and Italian American population in Trenton will be joined by representatives of the African American, Haitian and Latino communities.
The festivities will begin with a wreath-laying ceremony at which the Hon. Eric A. Jackson, mayor, will give a greeting at the Columbus Statue, located on Hamilton Ave., Oct. 13 at 9:30 a.m. Members of the richly diverse community will attend, wearing colorful native dress from their countries of origin. Children from the local schools will be in attendance. A procession will follow the ceremony from Columbus Park, along Butler Street, for the traditional Columbus Day Mass in St. Joachim’s Church, which is a worship site of Our Lady of the Angels Parish.
Another first for the city is a visitor from the region of Genova, Italy, a purported direct descendent of the navigator, Maria Colombo. She is accompanying the foreign folklore attraction, the “Amixi de Boggiasco e del Golfo del Paradiso,” from Boggiasco, Genova, in the region of Liguria, in northwest Italy. The group will sing traditional Italian hymns during the Mass. The group will then entertain the community by singing and dancing in front of the church after the Mass, and also at the luncheon that will follow in Centennial Hall, which is located below the church.
The program is co-sponsored by Our Lady of the Angels Parish; the Honorary Vice Consul for Italy, in Trenton, Emerita; Cav. Gilda Rorro Baldassari, Ed.D.; the New Jersey Italian and Italian American Heritage Commission (NJIIAHC); the Ocean County Columbus Day Parade Committee and the Trenton Council, Knights of Columbus.
The mission of the NJIIAHC is to educate all students and the public about the achievements and contributions of Italian heritage.
Tickets for the luncheon are $20 and must be purchased in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Seating is limited. For reservations, call Janice Swierczek at 609-937-2040.
