Christ the King Parish in Long Branch - the merged parishes of Our Lady Star of the Sea, St John the Baptist and Holy Trinity - celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima May 12.
Candles were lit as the rosary began in the misty evening at Holy Trinity Church thru the streets of Long Branch on the way to Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, where Mass was celebrated by Father Daniel Peirano, pastor of Christ the King; Father Angelo Amaral and Father Thomas Vala. Deacon Robert Vignolini assisted in the celebration of the special liturgy.
Worshippers concluded the evening by waving white handkerchiefs as a way of saying goodbye to Our Lady while singing "Uma Prece Final."
The Feast of Our Lady of Fatima is celebrated May 12 in honor of Mary's appearances to three Portuguese children in Fatima between May 13 and Oct. 13, 1917. Mary revealed three "secrets" to the children and asked them to pray the rosary for peace in the world.
The feast day was approved by the local bishop in 1930 and added to the Church's worldwide calendar in 2002.
