Children from around Diocese take lead in celebrating All Saints Day

All Saints Day was marked Nov. 1 in parish and school communities across the Diocese of Trenton, with everything from lessons on the lives of saints to students dressing up for the day as chosen saints.
In St. Mary School, Middletown, students in grades one through four worked with their families to select a saint to dress up as for All Saints Day, also bringing in props like the Baby Jesus or lambs for St. Bernadette.

While at Mass, any of the students could be called on to speak about the virtues of the saint they selected, so all were also encouraged to study the lives of the religious figures. Younger students prepared with their families and in class, and older students conducted research for class presentations.
The day also included the Saints Alive awards program, involving students in all grades and classes in St. Mary School. Each month, classes are provided a saint whose virtues they are encouraged to follow, and teachers select one student who best resembles those virtues. The school’s saint for October was St. Luke, and for November it is St. Andrew.
In St. Anthony Claret Parish, Lakewood, the parish prayer group invited the children in the religious education program to similarly come to the church dressed as a saint. Participants were greeted by prayer, music and food for an evening that also proved to be educational.
Divine Word Father Guilherme Andrino, parochial vicar and youth coordinator for the parish, explained that the youngsters shared with their peers information about the saint who they dressed up as for the day.
A special liturgy for All Saints Day in St. Veronica School, Howell, also saw many students dressed up as their favorite saints, complete with full costumes and props. Not only did the school’s third-graders come dressed as the saint they were assigned to research and report on, but they also led the congregation in prayer.
All Saints Day was also marked in St. Leo School, Lincroft, where students attended a morning Mass and offered prayer for St. Jose Sanchez Del Rio, the patron saint of teenagers, and all saints who have gone before us.
