Center to offer courses on self defense, basic boating safety

St. Francis Community Center Counseling Service, Brant Beach, will hold a free self defense class June 17 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Jersey State Marital Arts Training Facility, 702 U.S. 9, Little Egg Harbor.

Participants will practice basic strikes/blocks, attacks and self defense techniques. A question and answer session will be on safety, attacker patterns and prevention. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to wear socks or remain barefooted. The class is for men and women 18 years of age and older. Registration is required and space is limited. To register, call 609-494-1554.

St. Francis Community Center is holding a basic boating safety course June 16 and 17 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the community center located at 4700 Long Beach Blvd.

The New Jersey State Police Certification Course for Basic Boating Safety will consists of a total of eight hours of lecture and video with homework and test. The class will prepare and certify participants  to operate a motor boat or a personal water craft vessel in New Jersey. Certified operators ages 13-15 may operate vessels up to a 1 hp motor. However, if the vessel is more than 12 feet long, the motor may be up to 9.9 hp. Certified operators ages 16 and older may operate any motor boat or personal watercraft.

Registration is $85 and classes are forming. Workbooks will be provided. To register, visit www.stfranciscenterlbi.org or call 609-494-8861.
