The Catholic Women of Zion, a ministry which aims to nurture women’s spiritual, mental and emotional needs by reinforcing the traditional teachings of the Church, is celebrating its 25th anniversary Feb. 8 during a half-day retreat to be held in St. William the Abbot Parish, Howell. The evangelizing group encourages daily prayer, frequent participation in the sacraments, and daily scripture study as means to unveil God’s plan for their lives.
CWOZ group members faithfully follow the traditional teachings of the Church and address her needs through corporal and spiritual works of mercy using Our Lady as model for all women. The group was launched by Mary Ann Collett and Father John Campoli who had ministered together at monthly healing Masses in Holy Trinity Parish, Long Branch. It received approval by Bishop Emeritus John C. Reiss and received an apostolic blessing from Blessed John Paul II to begin its first chapter in Feb. 1989.
The motto of the group is taken from Psalm 128: “May the Lord bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.” Ministries within the group include networking, a prayer chain and the service of a psychologist and social worker to address practical concerns.
Chapter I meets quarterly in Holy Family Parish, Lakewood; a second chapter, formed in Feb. 1997, meets quarterly in Pope Pius X Parish, Forked River. Father Michael D. Sullivan, pastor, St. Mary of the Lake Parish, Lakewood, serves as the group’s spiritual adviser.
The CWOZ’s 25th anniversary retreat day in St. William the Abbot Parish will feature a Mass, prayer, music, networking and speaker Lorraine Doan. Doan, born and raised in Trenton, launched her music ministry in 1996 and has sold nearly 100,000 CDs of religious music through EWTN and other sources.
