Caretakers find respite in annual retreat

Those who walk with the sick make a journey that is at once both enriching and exhausting for body, mind and soul.

To provide sustenance for the journey, the diocesan Department of Pastoral Care will host the sixth annual Pastoral Care Retreat, May 4, in San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch.

A variety of caregivers, including parish visitors of the sick, chaplains, clergy, religious, homebound visitors, employees and volunteers in nursing homes, hospices and hospitals, spiritual directors, lay ecclesial ministers, family caregivers, faith community nurses and other healthcare professionals will be led by Jesuit Father William Sneck, a full-time staff  member of the Jesuit Center in Wernersville, Pa.

Father Sneck, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology, has served as associate director of novices and assistant director of the Jesuit Center. Since 1985, he has served as teacher of pastoral counseling in Loyola College, Baltimore.

A widely respected workshop and retreat leader with interests in the integration of psychology and spirituality as represented by the work of Carl G. Jung, Father Sneck has led Center weekends on the “hard” emotions of hurt, anger, guilt, shame, fear, depression, grief and forgiveness and on dream analysis.

The Pastoral Care Retreat Day will run from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., with registration and continental breakfast from 8:05 - 8:45 a.m.

Deadline for registration is April 25 or when capacity is reached. Cost is $40 which includes continental breakfast and hot lunch.
