The whimsically named ‘Knit Wits’ ministry of St. Mary Parish, Middletown, began about four years ago with nine ladies wielding knitting needles and crochet hooks to craft yarn into items for sale and donation. The group, now numbering 21 craftswomen, have created numerous items, including prayer shawls and lap throws for retired clergy and religious, items for premature babies at local hospitals and blankets for veterans. Proceeds from annual sales held at the parish go to local charities. ‘Knit Wits’ member Sabina Weglarz observed, “When we started this group, we never realized how much we [would] help each other, not only in learning how to knit or crochet, but we are here for one another in good times and bad.” Photo courtesy of St. Mary Parish.
