Broadening the RCIA Journey
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
The 2019 Lenten retreat held April 6 in Mother of Mercy Parish, Asbury Park, drew more than 250 RCIA elect, candidates and team members for a day that included prayer experiences, keynote talks and service projects that focused on the three pillars of Lent -- prayer, fasting and almsgiving -- the theme of this year's retreat. Keynote speaker Father Robert Kaeding, pastor of Precious Blood Parish, Monmouth Beach, spoke on prayer and acts of service, while Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Ruth Bolarte, director of the Office of Multicultural Ministry in the Metuchen Diocese, addressed fasting. Later in the day, the gathering participated in service projects by assembling packages of non-perishable food items, toiletries and clothing items such as socks and underwear to be delivered to nearby outreach agencies including the St. Peter Claver Outreach Center, The Center in Asbury Park, which provides services to persons with HIV and AIDS, and the Rescue Mission.
