Bishop O'Connell posts from Rome Jan 9, 2014

The pilgrimage tour began early on Thursday as our priests left Rome for Subiaco and Monte Cassino. The two-hour trip brought them through the Italian countryside on another sunny day. Subiaco is the town famous for the foundation of the Benedictine Religious Order by St. Benedict in the fifth century. His twin sister, St. Scholastica, founded an order of nuns in an abbey about five miles from that of her brother.
Our priests had the chance to roam around both towns freely and absorb the spiritual environment, stopping to pray as they went. They enjoyed a full lunch after Mass celebrated by Fr. Harry Cullen.
I spent some of the day in meetings, especially at the Vatican Congregation for the Clergy. Around 1, my secretary and I joined Cardinal Rode and some officials for lunch.
The pilgrims returned for supper at the hotel around 7:30.
