Bishop O'Connell celebrates Mass in Belmar after gazebo gathering canceled
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
The Mass at the Belmar Beach gazebo may have been canceled due to inclement weather Aug. 19, but rain didn't stop Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., from visiting with the Shore community.
Instead, Bishop O’Connell celebrated the 10 a.m. Mass in St. Rose Church, Belmar.
The four shoreline parishes that comprise Cohort 19 were supposed to gather for a 9:30 a.m. Mass at the gazebo, but faithful were alerted early in the morning that rain had thwarted the event.
Organizers say the Mass will be rescheduled for a later date.
Last year, nearly 1,000 people attended the Mass from the parishes of St. Rose, St. Catharine-St. Margaret, Spring Lake; St. Mark, Sea Girt, and Ascension Parish, Bradley Beach, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Avon – which is now known as the newly formed St. Teresa of Calcutta.
