Bishop designates Feb. 22 as day of prayer, thanksgiving for Pope Benedict XVI

Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., has announced that Feb. 22, 2013, the Feast of the Chair of St. Peter, will be observed as a day of prayer and thanksgiving throughout the Diocese of Trenton for the ministry and service of Pope Benedict XVI. Bishop O’Connell has called for the intentions of the Holy Father to be included in all Masses celebrated in the Diocese that day.
Also on Feb. 22, the diocesan community will gather for a Mass of Thanksgiving at 12:10 p.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. Bishop O’Connell will celebrate the Mass, joined by priests of the Diocese. All of the faithful are invited to participate.
The Feast of the Chair of St. Peter brings to mind the mission of teacher and pastor conferred by Christ on Peter, and continued in an unbroken line down to the present Pope. It was announced Feb. 11 that Pope Benedict XVI will resign the papacy effective Feb. 28 due to declining health.
