Before canonization, faithful share memories of Mother Teresa's visit to Trenton
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
While the Monitor was working on its special edition to coincide with the canonization of St. Teresa of Kolkata, many visitors flowed through the publication’s offices to talk about their experiences during the saint’s 1995 visit to Trenton.
A discussion among Associate Editor Mary Stadnyk, Msgr. Sam Sirianni and Msgr. Edward Arnister inspired the photo included with this column and resulted in the following question being posted on Facebook: Were you in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral during Mother Teresa’s visit?
There was an overwhelming response as faithful from throughout the Diocese and beyond shared their memories. Some responses in the sampling below have been edited for brevity and/or clarity.
Father Jim Grogan, parochial vicar in Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Moorestown: What a privilege it was to be there! I was in the Diocesan Choir at the time, and still remember that in order to get past security and gain entrance to the loft, we needed to carry our score from the recent concert, Mozart’s Requiem; that was our “hall pass,” and what great views we had from the choir loft.
Maryanne McGurk Roman: I was in the last pew, on the right-hand side. I was blessed and surprised to get into the church, brought my daughter up to Trenton, she was in the bell choir from OLGC, Moorestown. It was such a privilege to be in her presence.
Deacon Bob Tharp of St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish, Hamilton: Yes and got to give her the Precious Blood of Christ.
Rita Bartolini Haney: Yes, and I got a great picture of her.
Mary Thomas: I have a wonderful memory of having the privilege of singing in the Festival Choir for that Mass.
Mary Anne Huegel: Wasn’t there, but I sat in the seat where Mother Teresa sat in the first row of the church named after her (Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish) in Mahanoy City, Pa. … Praise and glory to the beloved for this great caring saint ... I am and was blessed to be there ... Thank you, God, for your grace and blessings!
The special edition, “A Saint Among Us,” has been mailed to all Monitor subscribers and will be available in limited supply in all churches. It is also available to view and download at TrentonMonitor.com.
