In preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Dec. 12, St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton Square, wanted to create a visual experience that reminded people of her title as Patroness of the Unborn.

The Women of Spirit spirituality group and the Prayer Shawl Ministry joined forces, along with other parish volunteers, to fashion a display of handcrafted baby booties – one pair representing each child baptized in St. Greg’s in 2018. In all, 105 pairs – 210 booties – were displayed, complete with a tag indicating the name of each newborn.

“I felt so happy to be a part of it,” said Peg Kowalski, St. Gregory the Great ministry volunteer coordinator. “People have been asking about them.”

The booties were part of a week-long celebration of the parish’s reception of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Miracle Torch on Nov. 25. Following the 10:30 Mass welcoming the torch, Father Michael McClaine, pastor, blessed the baby booties and invited people to view the display.

“I was surprised how many people spent time reading the names and looking at them,” Kowalski said. “That’s exactly what we wanted.”

The booties will be on display through Dec. 12, after which they will be donated to young mothers of infants served by Good Counsel Homes, Riverside, and Choice One Partners, Lawrenceville.

The week’s events, organized by the parish’s multi-ministry Our Lady of Guadalupe Committee, included a Rachael’s Vineyard awareness talk following morning Mass Nov. 28 by Father Jay Bowden, parish weekend assistant and former spiritual director for the ministry. Rachael’s Vineyard is a post-abortion healing ministry, offering retreats that allow participants to renew and rebuild hearts broken by abortion.
