Applications will be accepted for the annual CCHD-DT grant

Catholic social services agencies within the four-county diocese are once again invited to apply for monetary assistance through the Catholic Campaign for Human Development — Diocese of Trenton social service grant.

Father Joseph Jakub, director of CCHD-DT, said the grant monies are received from the collection that is taken up in each parish within the diocese the weekend before Thanksgiving. Of the amount collected, 75 percent is sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops national office of CCHD and 25 percent is retained by the diocese to be used for the awarding of grants. This year, the diocese will award between three and five grants in the amount of $3,000 to $10,000 each. Due to the limited number of grants available, social service agencies are asked to complete an application and awards will be based on three major criteria:

•The agency will have a mission of providing social services with a focus on basic human needs (food, clothing, shelter, jobs, etc.)

•Applications will only be accepted from Catholic social service agencies recognized and approved by Daughter of Charity Sister Joanne Dress, diocesan executive secretary for Catholic Social Services.

•Priority will be given to new initiatives taken by agencies and to those that enhance or provide for a foundation of self-sufficiency.

Father Jakub explained that the CCHD-DT underwent a significant restructuring process last year because a high number of grants had been awarded each year which resulted in the distribution of small amounts of money. With the restructuring however, it was decided to award a smaller number of grants so that greater monetary amounts may be distributed.

“In moving forward, CCHD-DT will now only award three to five grants each year in the amounts of $3,000 to $10,000. This means that the CCHD-DT grant process has become much more competitive,” said Father Jakub.

Catholic social service agencies in need of more information on the CCHD-DT or to obtain an application may do so as of Aug. 20 by visiting the Diocese of Trenton website at http://www.dioceseoftrenton.org/CCHD2012GrantApplication. Deadline to submit an application is Sept. 17.
