The Catholic Campaign for Human Development, Diocese of Trenton, is once again accepting applications for its annual campaign to award grants to Catholic social agencies in the Diocese that focus on providing basic human needs.
Each year, the CCHD-DT awards three to five grants in the amounts of $2,000 to $10,000 each to such agencies. The grant monies are received from the collection that is taken by each parish within the Diocese the weekend before Thanksgiving. This year’s collection will be held Nov. 18-19.
Seventy-five percent of monies collected by CCHD-DT is sent to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops national office of CCHD, and 25 percent is retained by the Diocese and awarded in grants.
In order to facilitate the awarding of grants in a transparent way, three criteria were developed. First, priority will be given to new initiatives taken by agencies and to those that enhance or provide for a foundation of self-sufficiency. Second, the agency will have a mission of providing social services with a focus on basic human needs, such as food, clothing, shelter or jobs. Third, applications will only be accepted from Catholic social agencies recognized as such by the National Catholic Directory and parish social service outreach programs in the Diocese of Trenton.
In a letter addressed to pastors of the Diocese, Father John C. Garrett, diocesan director for CCHD and pastor of Resurrection Parish, Delran, wrote, “With the support of your parish, we continue to build the kingdom of God in our midst.”
Grants will not be given to fund salaries, building upgrades, operating deficits, research projects or cost of fundraising. Applications will be accepted beginning Sept. 1 and are due Oct. 1; those received after the deadline will not be considered. Before awarding a grant, a site visit may be necessary. An end-of-the-year report is due by the recipient, and monies must be used within that year. Grant recipients must be willing to publicize how the grant was used by the Diocese of Trenton.
Grant applications can be downloaded from the Diocese of Trenton website at dioceseoftrenton.org/catholic-campaign-for-human-development.
For more information on the grant or to request a copy of the grant application, contact Father Garrett at [email protected]. Applications should be forwarded to Father Garrett, c/o CCHD, 701 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrenceville, N.J. 08638.
