Annual Pastoral Retreat planned for May 6

July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.

The diocesan Department of Pastoral Care will host its 10th annual Pastoral Care Retreat May 6 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in San Alfonso Retreat House, Long Branch. Intended as a day of prayer, reflection and renewal with other caregivers, it will teach simple practices that will strengthen and uplift them while they care for others.

Retreat presenter is John Patrick Gatton, author of “God’s Strengthening Love for Caregivers: Enabling Me to Care for You.” Gatton, a parishioner in St. Mary of the Lake, Lakewood, has worked as a consultant in establishing motivational work environments and developing corporate consulting skills for such clients as CBS Inc., Exxon Chemical, Sara Lee and Marist College. He currently creates and presents workshops for cancer patients and their families for the American Cancer Society. The Christian writer whose stories about heaven, community life, friendship and ordinary achievements uplift the reader's spirit as they focus on the goodness that is within each of us is the author of such works as “A Journey with the Spirit of Life,” “Mary of Nazareth, Storyteller” and “The Richness of the Catholic Faith: A Poet’s View.”

Registration and continental breakfast will be held from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m., followed by prayer, group exercises, presentations and discussion. Mass will be celebrated by Vincentian Father Martin McGeough, diocesan coordinator of jail and prison ministries.

The day is intended for all who journey with the sick: parish visitors of the sick, chaplains, clergy, religious, employees and volunteers in nursing homes, those who minister in hospices and hospitals, spiritual directors, family caregivers, faith community nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Cost is $40 and includes continental breakfast and hot lunch.  Registration deadline is April 29.  To register on line, see www.dioceseoftrenton.org/pastoralcare, or mail your name, address, phone and parish to:  Diocese of Trenton, Attn: Department of Pastoral Care, 701 Lawrenceville Road, Trenton, N.J. 08648.
