In honor of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, the Diocese of Trenton joined the universal Church to commemorate his Oct. 4 feast day with special prayer services and blessings of pets. This year, 56 parishes and a host of schools welcomed scores of dogs, cats, horses and other pets, as well as their owners, to receive a special blessing and sprinkling with holy water. Other related feast day projects undertaken by parishes and schools included collecting monetary donations for local animal shelters.
