Adult faith formation events offered

St. Ann Parish, Lawrenceville, will host several lectures and workshops to encourage adults to further their education in the richness and depth of Catholicism this fall.

 Its first lecture series will be Christian Art: From the Early Centuries through the Middle Ages with Aneta Samkoff, set to begin Sept 22. Also, A New Sacred Arts Workshop for Beginners facilitated by Terry Galvin Anderson will begin Sept. 27. Lastly, the parish will offer The Spiritual Practice of Lectio Divina, Praying with Sacred Texts and Arts starting Sept. 30 with Laura Durham.

Samkoff’s first lecture on Sept. 22, entitled The Beginnings of Christian Art will be devoted to the development of Christian art from the earliest centuries of Christianity. Her second lecture, Icons in Byzantium will be Oct. 20, and will trace the history of religious icons in Byzantium including the period of iconoclasm and triumph of iconophile beliefs.  The third meeting Jan. 26, 2015 will be about Church architecture.  The series will finish Feb. 23, 2015 with the art and architecture of pilgrimage including the souvenirs from early medieval travel to the Holy Land. All of her lectures will be given at 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the church. 

A New Sacred Arts Workshop for Beginners will be on Sept. 27 and Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and on Sept. 28 and Nov. 16 from 12:30-3 p.m. The workshop will explore the symbols inspired by Ireland’s Book of Kells. Fee is $75 and includes instruction, materials, brushes, and a 24-K gold leaf. To register, contact Anderson at [email protected] or 609-213-3388.

 The Spiritual Practice of Lectio Divina is an eight-week workshop that will begin with Introduction to Lectio Divina: history and tradition, forms, movements and texts Sept. 30; followed by Lectio and Meditatio: deep reading, listening, and reflection on Scripture, Oct. 7; Lectio and Contemplatio: spoken prayer and silent communion, relationship to centering prayer and other forms of contemplation, Oct. 14; The senses and hermeneutics of Scripture: from literal to spiritual meaning, Oct. 21; Visio Divina: Praying with sacred icons and art, Oct. 28; Audio Divina: Praying with Gregorian Chant and sacred music, Nov. 4; Sustained Lectio: longer-term encounters with Scripture and liturgy, Nov. 11; and Lectio for life: finding the sacred in nature and life experience, Nov. 18.

Dr. Dunham is a former academic and ordained minister, now Catholic, and is author of Path of the Purified Heart: The Spiritual Journey as Transformation.
