A statement from Most Rev. David M. O'Connell, Bishop of Trenton, on the death of Most Rev. Edward T. Hughes, second Bishop of Metuchen
July 29, 2019 at 12:37 p.m.
I was saddened to learn of Bishop Hughes' death. I first met him during my earliest days as a priest when I was teaching high school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and then Monsignor Hughes was superintendent of Catholic Schools. He always impressed me as extremely competent and extremely kind. His service as second Bishop of Metuchen benefitted from those same characteristics. His gracious, gentle personality coupled with genuine love for the Church inspired many of his priests and people. He never lost his interest in Catholic education and his advocacy for this apostolic activity and for those engaged in it will be an enduring part of the legacy he leaves behind. May God grant this good priest and bishop eternal rest.
